Oscar Actors: Bannen, Ian–Supporting Actor Nominee

Ian Bannen, a Scottish actor, was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor for “Flight of the Phoenix,” Robert Aldrich’s popular adventure film about an airplane crash in the Arabian deserts. Bannen played a cynical oil-field worker in an all-star cast that included Jimmy Stewart as the pilot, Peter Finch, Richard Attenborough, George Kennedy, and others.

Ironically, the stunt pilot Paul Mantz was killed in a crash during the shooting of the picture.
