Best Director:

Martin Scorsese, “The Irishman,” Oscar winner
Todd Phillips, “Joker” (First-Time Nominee)
Sam Mendes, “1917” (Oscar winner)
Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (Oscar nominee)
Bong Joon Ho, “Parasite” (first-time nominee)

All five films directed by these helmers have been nominated for Best Picture, including South Korean sleeper hit, “Parasite.”

Of the five nominees, two have won the Best Director Oscar before: Sam Mendes, in 199 for his feature debut, “American Beauty,” and Scorsese, in 2006 for “The Departed.”
