Oscar 2016: Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness Wins Best Docu Short

The HBO Documentary Films presentation A GIRL IN THE RIVER: THE PRICE OF FORGIVENESS received the Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary Short at the 88th annual Academy Awards, presented at the 2016 ceremony of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on February 28.

Told through the lens of a love story, A GIRL IN THE RIVER: THE PRICE OF FORGIVENESS examines the tensions between modernism and tradition in Pakistan, following a courageous young woman who lives to tell of her attempted honor killing by her own family.

The groundbreaking documentary debuts MONDAY, MARCH 7 (9:00-9:40 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO, to commemorate International Women’s Day (March 8). The film is directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, whose previous credits include HBO’s Oscar-winning “Saving Face,” making her the first woman to win two documentary Oscars.
