Oscar 2013: Supporting Actor–Barkhad Abdi

Barkhad Abdi, “Captain Phillips”

Oscar history: First nomination

Not only is this Abdi’s first nomination, this is also his first acting role. Prior to taking on the part of Muse in “Captain Phillips,” Abdi was working as a chauffeur in Minnesota where he didn’t have any aspirations of becoming an actor. After his success in “Captain Phillips,” it’s easy to imagine he’ll be appearing more and more on screen, as he’s proven himself a stand-out this season. As the leader of a group of Somali pirates, he managed to shake the core of his titular co-star. If Abdi can make Tom Hanks nervous, then he deserves the Oscar nod.

The other nominees are:
Bradley Cooper, American Hustle
Michael Fassbender, 12 Years a Slave
Jonah Hill, Wolf of Wall Street
Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
