June 28, 2013–Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ava DuVernay and Paul Feig are among the 276 new members invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
The total of new invitees is exactly 100 more than were tapped in 2012. Total membership in the Academy numbers more than 6,000.
“We’re very proud,” Academy prexy Hawk Koch said. “The difference this year is we relaxed the quota system. In the past eight or nine years, each branch could only bring in X amount of members. There were people each branch would have liked to get in but couldn’t. We asked them to be more inclusive of the best of the best, and each branch was excited, because they got to bring in the people who should be in the branch.”
Koch said that in particular, visual effects and documentary were among the branches with the biggest gains, reflecting their intense recent growth.
Among the other noteworthy actors and actresses invited to join the Academy are Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Paula Patton and Danny Trejo, along with such veteran thesps as Charles Grodin and Emmanuelle Riva, nominated this past year for an Oscar.
In the director column, new invitees include Catherine Hardwicke, Ken Kwapis, Pablo Larrain, Steve McQueen, Kim Nguyen and Benh Zeitlin. Writer invitees include Reggie Rock Bythewood, Julie Delpy, Lena Dunham, John Gatins, John Lee Hancock, Rian Johnson, Jeff Nichols, Sarah Polley and this year’s Oscar winner, Chris Terrio of “Argo.”
WB CEO Kevin Tsujihara is among the executives who have been greenlit for inclusion.
As is often the case, this year’s list figures to be scrutinized how many women and people of color have been chosen to help bring diversity to the Academy membership.
“Honestly, what goes on in the community (discussion) isn’t what the committee looks at,” Koch said. “The committee looks at, ‘Are they in a key creative position in the arts and sciences of motion pictures? Is that person someone who is the best of the best in their particular field.’ “
“What we discussed in each committee (was to) take a look, there maybe some people we have overlooked in the past, whether they’re women, whether they’re people of color or whether they’re Caucasian. … I must say there were a few where it was, ‘What, he’s not in? She’s not in?’
“Why wasn’t Prince in before? Maybe it was an oversight, maybe it was for whatever reason, but Prince is now a member of the academy.”
Koch said that the Academy staff also researched past omissions and made recommendations. He added that he wasn’t preoccupied with why the relaxation of quotas hadn’t arrived sooner.
“I think the time had come,” said Koch, whose term as Academy prexy will conclude this summer. “I got very lucky this year. There were a lot of things that should have been changed at the Academy, and I was here at the right time to say, ‘Let’s go guys, let’s go forward.’”
