Sept 13, 2008–“The Rest Is Silence,¬î a epic movie within a movie, will represent Romania for the foreign-language Oscar at the Academy Awards. Directed by Nae Caranfil, it's a chronicle of the the making of ¬ìThe War of Independence,¬î Romania¬ís first cinematic epic shot in 1912, 35 years after the bloody national conflict it depicts.
The story follows the struggles of its fictional director to win the support he needs to get his underdog project off the ground, and prevent a big French studio from stealing his idea. Th film is said to have the comic appeal of Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway.”
Critics have praised both the film’s writing and cinematography. With a budget of $4 million, “The Rest is Silence” is one of the most expensive pictures in Romania's film history.
The movie premiered in competish at the 2007 Locarno Film Festival and also screened at the 2008 Telluride Film Festival, where it was well received.
