Oscar Impact: Slumdog Millionaire Benefits from Nominations

January 25, 09–Fox Searchlight’s Slumdog Millionaire climbed the charts to No. 5 at the box-office, after picking up top Oscar nominations, grossing $10.6 million from 1,411 runs as it successfully expanded nationwide.

The commercial performance of the movie, up 80% over the previous weekend, was a triumph for Fox Searchlight, as the picture opened in markets around the country after a ten-week limited run.

Directed by Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire received 10 Oscar nominations, the second most after Paramount’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which picked 13 nominations.

Over the weekend, “Slumdog Millionaire” also won the Producers Guild of America’s top award, which increases its chances of winning the Best Picture Oscar.
