February 10, 2008–“Atonement” won best film at the British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, and Daniel Day-Lewis took the best actor prize. Joel and Ethan Coen were named best director, and Marion Cotillard best actress for “La Vie En Rose.”
The French picture was actually the biggest winner of the night with four awards, although the foreign language prize went instead to “The Lives of Others.”
In a study in BAFTA's contrasts, first time American writer Diablo Cody took original screenplay for “Juno,” and veteran Brit wordsmith Ronald Harwood won adapted screenplay for “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”
