




Jan 23, 2007– The Oscar news for the upcoming 2006 awards is as follows — “Dreamgirls” led the nominations for the 79th Academy Awards, with eight bids. However, the musical did not get a Best Picture or Best Director nods. The five Best Picture nominees are: “Babel,” “The Departed,” “Letters From Iwo Jima,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “The Queen.”
In 16 of the past 20 years, the film with the most noms went on to win best picture. On the other hand, the top nom-getter only ended up winning twice in the last five years.
Nominations were announced at 5:38 a.m. Tuesday at the Acads BevHills headquarters by AMPAS prez Sid Ganis and Salma Hayek.
Final ballots will be mailed Jan. 31 and are due Feb. 20. Oscars will be held at the Kodak Theater on Feb. 25.
