Whoopi Goldberg was the host of the Oscar telecast
She cracked: “I haven’t seen many poles mistreated since WWII,” referring to the movie Showgirls.
Goldberg continued: “Elizabeth Shue played a hooker, Mira Sorvino played a hooker, Sharon Stone played a hooker, How many times did Charlie Sheen get to vote?”
(Sheen reportedly spent 50,000 as a customer of Hollywood’s Madame Heidi Fleiss.)
Robin Williams presented the Honorary Oscars to animator Chuck Jones, ending his speech: “Now, if Chuck could only animate Bob Dole, we could have an interesting campaign.”
Many political jokes and references were made in 1996, which was an election ear.
