Oscar 1959: Foreign Language Film

In the fourth year of the new competitive category of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the winner was the French film, Black Orpheus.

The New York Film Critics Circle honored another French film, The 400 Blows, Truffaut’s striking debut, with its top honor for foreign films.

The five nominees were:

Black Orpheus, France (winner)

The Bridge, Germany (Federal Republic)

La Vanganza, Spain

The Great War, Italy

The Village on the River, the Netherlands
