Oscar 1958: Foreign Language Film

In the third year of the new competitive category of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, the winner was Jacques Tati’s French farce, Mon Oncle (My Uncle).

The New York Film Critics Circle also honored Mon Oncle with its top honor for foreign films.

The five nominees were:

Mon Oncle (My Uncle), France (winner)

Arms and the Man, Germany (Federal Republic)

La Vanganza, Spain

The Road a Year Long, Yugoslavia

The Usual Unidentified, Italy

Highlights Neglected:

Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece, The Magician, deserved but did not earn an Oscar nomination.
