Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, also known as the grandson of Norwegian actress Liv Ullmann and Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, made his directing debut with Armand, a dramatic thriller set in school, starring Renate Reinsve.
The film had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2024 Cannes Film Fest, where it won the Caméra d’Or, for Best First Feature Film.
It was chosen as the Norwegian entry for Best International Feature Film Oscar but was not among te final five nominees.
After an alleged sexual aggression between two boys, aged 6, the parents and school staff are called in to clarify the incident. They convene Anders and Sarah, the parents of Jon, and Elisabeth, the single mother of Armand, who allegedly assaulted Jon.
The entirety movie takes place during the meeting between the school staff and the parents.
Renate Reinsve, the muse for Yohacim Trer’s Best Foriegn Language Oscar nominee, The Worst Person in the World, renders another outstanding performance as the mother of the film’s titualr boy.
Reinsve woul earn a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role in Trier’s Sentimental Value, which won the 2026 Best International Feature Oscar.
