La La Land: No Best Ensemble from the Screen Actors Guild

No “La La Land” for Ensemble

Most Oscar gurus (including yours truly) that La La Land is this year’s frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar.

Damien Chazelle’s charming musical has already won Best Picture from two influential groups: The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) and the Critics Choice Award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA)/

The film’s producers were working hard to convince industry members that the musical is an ensemble piece, featuring a great supporting cast of actors like J.K. Simmons, Tom Everett Scott, and Rosemarie DeWitt.

Not landing an ensemble nod might not dent the film’s awards path.  But it’s likely that voters saw it as more of a two-hander between leads Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, both of whom were nominated.

Besides, the film is in good company; several great ensembles in films likely to land best picture nods like “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Hell or High Water” also didn’t make the final cut at the SAG nominations.
