Emilia Pérez: Gascóngate–Netflix Big Dilemma

Trans Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón was expected to fly to Los Angeles from her home in Spain for busy week awards campaigning.

My Oscar Book:

Friday, Feb. 7: she and colleagues would have reconvened at the Critics Choice Awards, in the center of Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar.

Sunday, Feb. 9, she was to have made the drive up to Santa Barbara to be feted as one of this year’s nine Virtuoso Award recipients; the others include her fellow best actress nominees Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).

But the massive controversy that is engulfing Gascón over comments that she posted on X means that she will not be coming to Hollywood at all.
Gascón has been writing without consultation with Netflix, which owns Emilia Pérez’s distribution rights in the US, Canada and the UK–

Tensions are high between Gascón and the streamer, which has invested millions in the film’s awards push. It was flourishing as recently as Jan. 23, when the film received a field-leading 13 Oscar nominations, just one shy of the all-time record.

The streamer is distancing itself from Gascón. Others who were to have attended some of the aforementioned events alongside the actress might have to cancel if she did not cancel hers.

With the final Oscar voting beginning Tuesday, Feb. 11, Netflix is working hard to try to spare Emilia Pérez’s other nominees–especially supporting actress nominee Saldaña, the clear frontrunner in her category.

Gascón has already been removed from email-blasts and ad-reads promoting the film for awards.
