March 31: Actor Brandon Lee is accidentally killed during the filming of The Crow.

May 27 – actress Kim Basinger files for bankruptcy after California judge orders her to pay $8.9 million for refusing to honor verbal contract to star in Boxing Helena. Basinger loses the town she purchased in 1989, Braselton, Georgia, to deal partner, pension fund of Chicago-based Ameritech.

May 28 – Produced by Hollywood Pictures, Super Mario Bros. marks the first video game film released, starring Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. The film grossed only $20.9 million domestically and receive negative reviews.

June 11 – The film version of Michael Crichton’s novel Jurassic Park, a dinosaur epic with special effects, directed by Spielberg, breaks box-office records with $50 million opening weekend, going on to become highest-grossing film worldwide with over $900 million.

June 18:

Schwarzenegger’s career falters with the commercial disappointment of Last Action Hero; Columbia new logo making its debut in that film.

Hocus Pocus is released by Disney Pictures with mixed reviews from critics and initially a box-office bomb; the film would be rediscovered by viewers via frequent TV airings and home video sales during Halloween season; now cult classic.

October 31 – actor River Phoenix accidentally dies of overdose during filming of Dark Blood. The film was later completed and released in 2012.

December 15 – Schindler’s List, directed by Spielberg, is released, winning 7 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.

December 22 – Turner acquired Castle Rock Entertainment.
