Neon plans to release the movie in theaters on August 1 as counterprogramming.
The feature, from first-time writer-director Michael Shanks, was one of the rare to spark a bidding war. Yet the sale still took several days to close. A24 was also in the running at other point, with other studios kicking the tires. It’s not clear what the final price tag is, but sources said the bidding was well over $10 million at one point in recent days. Another source said the final price reached $17 million, which makes it one of the biggest deals in Sundance history.
Franco and Brie have acted together in “The Little Hours,” “The Disaster Artist,” “Horse Girl” and “The Rental.”
Brie co-wrote the script for “Horse Girl,” while Franco made his directorial debut with “The Rental.” The couple last teamed up for 2023’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” which was the first film they penned together, with Brie starring and Franco directing the romantic comedy.
Franco was recently in A24’s “Love Lies Bleeding” with Kristen Stewart, which premiered at Sundance in 2024. He also appears in “Bubble & Squeak,” an off-beat comedy that appeared in the 2025 edition of Sundance, co-starring alongside Sarah Goldberg and Matt Berry.
