Jan 16, 2007–The Directors Guild of America has selected five first-time nominees for its feature docu award. The DGA announced Tuesday Amy Berg for Lionsgate's “Deliver Us From Evil,” Michael Glawogger for Lotus Quinte's “Workingman's Death,” James Longley for Typecast-HBO's “Iraq in Fragments,” Arunas Matelis for Studio Nominum's “Before Flying Back to Earth,” and Jean-Henri Meunier for Little Bear's “Ici Najac, a vous la terre.”
The winner will be announced at the DGA Awards on Feb. 3 at the Century Plaza.
“Deliver Us From Evil: and “Iraq in Fragments” are also on the short list of 15 finalists for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences documentary Oscar. Werner Herzog won the DGA's award last year for “Grizzly Man” while “March of the Penguins” won the Oscar.
Commercial Awards
The DGA also announced nominations for its commercials award, including three-time winner Joe Pytka. In his 15th DGA nod, Pytka was nominated for “Clydesdales American Dream,” Budweiser; “Preparation,” Disney; and “Where Were You,” WTC Memorial.
Also nominated were Dante Ariola of MJZ for “Snowball,” Travelers Insurance; “First Taste,” Coca-Cola; and “Human,” Johnny Walker; Bryan Buckley of Hungry Man for “Animal,” Amex; “Manthem” and “More Mayo” for Burger King; David Gray of Hungry Man for “Transvestite” and “Mugger,” Tribeca Film Festival; “Jesus Throws,” Full Tilt Poker; and “Born,” eBay; and Tom Kuntz of MJZ for “Fruit Pants,” Altoids; and “Trade,” “Beard” and “Leak” for Skittles.
It was Arriola's fourth nomination and Buckley's third. Craig Gillespie of MJZ won the award last year.
