High Sun: Dalibor Matanić’s Tale of Three Couples Over Time

Dalibor Matanić’s eighth feature, The High Sun (Zvizdan)  premiered in the Un Certain Regard series at the 2015 Cannes Film Fest; it’s his first time there since 1981.

The High Sun follows three pairs of lovers in 1991, 2001 and 2011 as they fight to be together in the face of ethnic tensions.

Depicting their passion for each other and for life, Matanić charts the trajectory that Croatia and its neighbors have gone through: pre-war violence, post-war wounds too fresh to heal and the potential for love to take root.

The three pairs are played by Tihana Lazović and Goran Marković, who  portray different characters, yet in each segment they convey the fragility and intensity of forbidden love.
