Sundance Babes: Women Directors–Boden, Anne (Half Nelson, Captain Marvel)

Multi-talented, Anna Boden is a film director, cinematographer, editor, and writer.

She is still best known as the co-writer of the 2006 film Half Nelson, for which Ryan Gosling won his first Best Actor Oscar nomination.

She has been collaborating with fellow filmmaker Ryan Fleck on many projects.

While studying film at NYU, Boden met Fleck on the set of a student film, andn they began dating and collaborating.

They jointly made the short docus “Have You Seen This Man?” and “Young Rebels,” before co-writing the short film Gowanus, Brooklyn, a sample feature aiming to find  financing for their script Half Nelson.

The short won a prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Fest. Boden and Fleck then made the film Half Nelson, starring Ryan Gosling, in 2006.

Boden and Fleck have since co-written and co-directed the 2008 film Sugar, which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Fest, about a 19-year-old Dominican who immigrates to the US to play minor league baseball. They wrote the screenplay together after doing research about Dominican immigrants.

In April 2017, Boden and fleck were hired to direct the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson.
