The location of Anthony Chen’s intimate film, The Breaking Ice, the icy Chinese city of Yanji near the North Korean border, offers insights into the circumstances of its protagonists lives, which are suspended as if frozen in place.
A trio–a woman and two men in their 20s (played with naturalistic restraint by Zhou Dongyu, Liu Haoran and Qu Chuxiao) is entangled in a complex romantic bond that is afflicted by all kinds of anxieties, manifest and latent.
