Cannes Film Fest 2003: Year 56–Van Sant’s Controversial Elephant Wins Top Award

The 56th Cannes Film Fest was held May 14-25, 2003.

The Palme d’Or honored the controversial American indie, Elephant by Gus Van Sant based on the Columbine High School massacre.

The festival opened with Fanfan la Tulipe, directed by Gérard Krawczyk and closed with the documentary, Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin.
