One of Them Days: Black Female Buddy Comedy, Starring Keke Palmer and SZA (in Film Debut)

One of Them Days benefited from being the first theatrical R-rated female Black comedy since the 2017 commercial hit Girls Trip.

The buddy comedy is directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, both in their feature debuts.

The Premise

Waitress Dreux Jones (Keke Palmer) and aspiring artist Alyssa Brown (SZA) live together along with Alyssa’s ne’er-do-well boyfriend Keshawn in a rundown apartment complex in Baldwin Village, Los Angeles.

When the first of the month arrives, their strict landlord Uche demands their rent of $1,500, threatening eviction unless they pay by 6 PM, though both women thought it was already paid.

Deducing that Keshawn must have taken the money and run away with it, they track him down to the home of Berniece, a woman he has been cheating with. A confrontation ensues, in which Keshawn admits to using the money to invest in his T-shirt company.

A critical and commercial success, One of Them Days grossed over $51 million on a budget of $14 million. (A sequel is in early development).
