Cannes Film Fest 2012–“Laurence Anyways,” the third feature of Xavier Dolan, Canada’s ambitious and flamboyant wunderkind, is an overlong, self-indulgent chronicle of love, whose course changes radically when one partner alters his sex.

Almodovar’s new comedy, “I’m So Excited,” is a minor work, a sex farce that’s retro in both the positive and negative meanings.

“World War Z,” the studio’s big-budget ($190 million) gamble, scored big with its $110 million-plus worldwide opening, of which an estimated $66 million came from domestic theaters. That marks the highest Stateside debut for a non-franchise film since “Avatar” opened with $77 million in December 2009.

Almodovar’s most successful film to date, “Women on the Verge of Nervous Breakdown,” combines joyously humor, violence, and melodrama.
