The heroine of his next feature, “The Flower of My Secret” (“La flor de mi secreto”) is a more mature and complex character than Kika. Enamored of the stupendous Marisa Paredes, arguably one of the best actresses working in world cinema today, Almodovar built a whole “woman picture” scenario around her.

With “Kika,” Almodovar’s humorous treatment of rape was criticized by reviewers who could not understand his continuous obsession with rape. “Kika“ was the director’s third consecutive feature facing charges of misogyny and exploitation.

First come first: “Pacific Rim” is one of the more satisfying and impressive spectacles this summer, offering a feast to the eyes, largely due to the idiosyncratic vision of the brilliant director Guillermo Del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”).
