Let the Oscar Race Begin

It may be too early to make Oscar predictions, and as of late August, there have been few Oscar-caliber pictures or performances.  However, one actor stands a good chance to receive an Oscar nomination, Christoph Waltz in Tarantino’s WWII fable, “Inglourious Basterds,” which opens August 21.

It's hard to tell whether Waltz, 52, hailing from Austria, will be competing for the supporting or lead Oscar as Tarantino's revenge fantasy is an ensemble picture.  And then there is Brad Pitt….

Playing an alchoholic, guilt-ridden mother, this was first of Deborah Kerr's six Oscar nominations. She was awarded an Honorary Oscar as compensation for having lost the legit contest.   

Stanley Kramer's apocalyptic Cold War drama “On the Beach,” was nominated for two Oscars: Film Editing for Frederic Knudtson and Scoring (Dramatic or Comedy) for Ernest Gold.

Sidney Lumet's political melodrama “Running on Empty” received two Oscar nominations, Screenplay (Original) for Naomi Foner and Supporting Actor for River Phoenix.

Charles Crichton's comedy “A Fish Called Wanda” was nominated for three Oscars, winning one, Supporting Actor for Kevin Kline.
