Oscar 2009: Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds

Let the Oscar Race Begin

It may be too early to make Oscar predictions, and as of late August, there have been few Oscar-caliber pictures or performances.  However, one actor stands a good chance to receive an Oscar nomination, Christoph Waltz in Tarantino’s WWII fable, “Inglourious Basterds,” which opens August 21.

 

It's hard to tell whether Waltz, 52, hailing from Austria, will be competing for the supporting or lead Oscar as Tarantino's revenge fantasy is an ensemble picture.  And then there is Brad Pitt….

Sidney Lumet's political melodrama “Running on Empty” received two Oscar nominations, Screenplay (Original) for Naomi Foner and Supporting Actor for River Phoenix.

Charles Crichton's comedy “A Fish Called Wanda” was nominated for three Oscars, winning one, Supporting Actor for Kevin Kline.
