Oscar 2009: Japan’s Entry Is Nobody to Watch Over Me

Ryoichi Kimizuka's "Dare mo mamotte kurenai" (“Nobody to Watch Over Me”) was chosen by the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan.   The suspense drama, about a cop assigned to protect a teenage girl, the sister of a murder suspect, was released in January by Toho.

 

 

 

 

Oscar 2009: Hong Kong’s Entry Is Prince of Tears

Director-writer Yonfan's "Prince of Tears," which world premiered at the 2009 Venice Film Fest, is Hong Kong's selection. Produced by Fruit Chan, the film is about Taiwan's Communist witch hunt in the early 1950s, known as the white terror, in which thousands were executed.

The buzz about Mo’Nique as an Oscar contender in the Best Supporting Actress category began in January, when her new film, “Precious: Based on the Novel by Sapphire,” won three awards at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival: Jury, Audience and Acting kudos.
