The Oscar is awarded to film artists of all nationalities. As my book, All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards, shows, about one fourth of the nominees have been foreign artists. This international dimension extends the visibility of the Oscar and contributes to its prestige. And the Oscar's prestige in turn makes for intense international competition. The scarcity of awards and the intense competition among filmmakers of all nationalities, have made the Oscar all the more desirable. 

 

Oscar 2009: Michael Stuhlbarg for Best Actor in Coens' Serious Man

Almost every year, the Academy's Acting Branch selects a relatively unknown actor for an Oscar Award nomination. These actors are highly skillful and carry with them years theatrical and TV work. However, they are not famous and they are not known to the large public from their movie roles.  This year, with strong critical support, savvy marketing from Focus Features, and some luck, it should be Michael Stuhlbarg, who turns in a splendid, multi-nuanced, serio-comic performance as a contemporary Job in the Coens' Jewish parable "Serious Man," one of the best pictures of the year.

 

 

 

 

Oscar 2009: Precious for Best Picture, Directing, Acting Awards

By now, "Precious" has played and won jury members and audiences hearts at Sundance Film Fest (in January), at the Cannes Film Fest (in May), and most recently, at the Toronto Film Fest, where it won the Audience Award, which speaks well of its potential commercial appeal.

 

 

 

Oscar Movies: Garden of the Finzi-Continis, The (1971)

Vittorio De Sica's The Garden of the Finzi-Continis received two Oscar nominations: Best Foreign Language Film, which it won, and Screenplay (Adapted) by Ugo Pirro and Vittorio Bonicelli.
