Oscar 2009: Long List of Visual Effects Contenders

Dec 11, 2009–The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) released its long list of 15 contenders for the Visual Effects Oscar today. As usual, there were some surprises in the films that made it and in those that did didn't.

The distinguished Polish actress was nominated for the Best Actress Oscar in 1965, for "The Shop on Main Street," the Czech film that won the foreign-language Oscar.

Oscar: Foreign Language Film Category–The Beginning

Officially, the first winner in this category was "La Strada" in 1956, which helped established Fellini as one of the most important European director. Anthony Quinn, as Zampano, an itinerant strong man, and Giulietta Masina, as the young woman he buys and abuses as his clown and servant, gave memorable performances in a film that was also nominated for its Original Screenpplay (by Fellini and Tullio Pinelli).
