I read about this Lynchburg Virginia school boards censorship of an illustration of a woman's vagina in a biology textbook. The board allowed the penis diagram, but deemed the inner vagina drawing a violation of a woman's natural modesty. The most shocking thing about this story is that it happened in 2000. It's medieval to see such perpetuation of squeamishness, distaste, fear of female anatomy–Lichtenstein
Black List: Making of a Relevant Documentary
Timothy's contacts were essential. Without his groundwork we wouldn't have Bill T. Jones, Dick Parsons, Faye Wattleton, or Lorna Simpson. It was the trust that these people had in him as an artist that was responsible for the launch of the project. He gave each of them a specific sense of what we were trying to do, and each of them came into the shoots with their curiosity piqued because, I imagine, they had never been approached for something like this–Elvis Mitchell, Docu Interviewer
Sleep Dealer: Sci-Fi with Director Alex Rivera
Sci-fi films almost always tell outsider stories, critical stories, yet so often the heroes are police or other authority figures. With “Sleep Dealer,” I wanted to put a new outsider–a would-be-immigrant‚Äîat the center of the story–writer-director Alex Rivera
There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson
You get giddy looking at all those amazing photos of California, getting a real sense of how people lived their lives. There's so much history in the oil areas around Bakersfield‚Äîthey're filled with the grandsons of oil workers and lots of folklore. So we did an incredible amount of research and I got to be a student again and that was a thrill–Writer-Director Paul Thomas Anderson
Untraceable: Gregory Hoblit’s Techno Thriller, Starring Diane Lane
I found the idea of a female-driven thriller irresistible. I like smart movies where the woman is at the helm of figuring it out and not just a damsel in distress prototype. I was fascinated by the whole cyber-crimes division of crime. I‚Äôm so na?Øve, I literally thought that computer viruses just spontaneously occurred, like viruses that we know in the world. It never occurred to me that people would maliciously invent harm and send it out into the universe like an arsonist–Star Diane Lane
