Varda, Agnes at 80: Interview–New Wave Director

Agnes Varda's new documentary, “The Beaches of Agnes,” in which she relates her life in movies and the movies in her life, opens July 3.

The excerpts from my films were treated as if they had come from a databank of my life’s work, with which I could take a scene of fiction or documentary, and use it out of context. I’ve also included some of my photography: for instance, some I did for Vilar at the Festival d’Avignon, my coverage of China in 1957, and the Cuban Revolution in 1962. It is the whole of my work as a filmmaker, as a photographer, and as a visual artist that tells my story better than my words alone.

Girl from Monaco, The: Interview with Writer-Director Anne Fontaine

I began by conceiving a character who is under the impression, like many others, that he controls his life.  He is a lawyer whose only weapon of defense –and attack—are words.  What interested me, was to create a character for whom eroticism transits through language.  But this character also emerged from my encounter with Fabrice Lucchini.  We’ve known each other for a long time, ever since I directed him in 1985-86 in “Voyage au bout de la nuit.”  I was always intrigued by his singularity, his whimsical nature and his great vulnerability.  In the end, my perception of him nourished the construction of the character–Anne Fontaine

Public Enemies: Interview with Director Michael Mann

“Their mobility and use of technology made them almost invincible. This was happening at a time when massive forces conspired against John Dillinger: what Hoover built with the FBI—the first national police force, the first interstate crime bill, the use of very progressive, modern technology and data management. They were doing what is routine in law enforcement now, but what had never been done before in this country–Michael Mann
