Wicked 2 Lands New Title of 2025 Release
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star in next year’s follow-up for the Broadway adaptation.
Demand is clearly high for the second movie–the first one has already surpassed 520 million globally as it heads into the holidays.
Loosely based on author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, Wicked tells the story of The Wizard of Oz’s characters before Dorothy’s arrival. Grande plays Glinda, while Erivo portrays Elphaba.
“You will be changed,” Wicked’s account posted in announcing the new title. “For Good” is a duet between Glinda and Elphaba that was written by Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz for the original stage show.
Rounding out the cast for the second film are Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.
The movie’s co-writer Winnie Holzman, who also penned the book for the stage musical, explained why she wasn’t concerned about fans potentially spoiling the second film.
Holzman joked about the musical, “It didn’t open yesterday — it’s been running for 21 years.”
