Star Wars: The Force Awakens has received an 11th hour Critics’ Choice Award nomination for best picture, the Broadcast Film Critics Association (of which I am a member), announced on Tuesday.
The sci-fi epic, which hit theaters on Friday, has been added as the 11th best picture nominee after the fact. The film was not screened in time for the initial nominations balloting. BFCA voters therefore decided to hold a special referendum on Monday to determine if it would have been nominated had members been able to consider it.
In 2000, “Cast Away” was similarly screened too late for normal consideration and the BFCA included it among 11 best picture nominees.
All other Critics’ Choice Award nominations remain as previously announced.
Winners will be revealed at the 21st annual Critics’ Choice Awards show on January 17, 2016 televised live at 5 p.m. PT on A&E, Lifetime and LMN and hosted by T.J. Miller.
