The Roundabout Theater Company revival of She Loves Me will become the first Broadway production to livestream a performance
Nominated for eight Tony Awards and starring Zachary Levi, Laura Benanti and Jane Krakowski, the show is set for live broadcast later this month via BroadwayHD.
As the theater industry has begun to explore the benefits of digital distribution, a few Off Broadway shows — including Daddy Long Legs and Buried Child— have already used given livestreaming. But She Loves Me marks the first time a Broadway production will stream one of its performances live.
The Roundabout revival seems a good candidate to give livestreaming a shot because, as a limited run set to end July 10, the show and its producers need have little fear of cannibalizing future live audiences. The gambit can also serve to pump up the Roundabout brand overall, while the digital capture, which will be available to subscribers in BroadwayHD’s on-demand library, can yield an ongoing trickle of revenue.
The livestream of “She Loves Me” also marks the latest offering from BroadwayHD, which aims to become a Netflix-like subscription channel for live theater fans.
The service previously streamed Off Broadway productions “Buried Child” and “Old Hats,” and behind-the-scenes show from last weekend’s Tony Awards.
The platform will offer access to the “She Loves Me” livestream to all its annual subscribers, while non-subscribers will be able to view it through a $9.99 viewing pass.
The live broadcast is set for June 30 from the Roundabout’s Studio 54.
