That could yield higher broadcast ratings, which the Oscars desperately seek.

How do you measure a film’s commercial success? By its entire gross at the domestic and/or global box-office?
Another way is to look at what the budget of the film was vis a vis its financial success.
In this respect, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, the 2016 Best Picture winner, stands out. Made on a small budget even for an indie ($1.5 million), it earned over $67 million at the box office, a ratio of 1:40.
