The nominees for the Producer Guild of America (PGA) annual awards were announced today. Of the 10 contenders, for me the biggest and most pleasant surprise was the nomination of Ex Machina.
Straight Outta Compton became the highest-grossing film directed by a black filmmaker earlier this year when it topped $160 million in domestic box office receipts. The film also landed a Screen Actors Guild nomination for best performance by an ensemble in December, making a strong contender for Best Picture Oscar nod.
The PGA is the only other industry group to utilize the preferential balloting system the Academy employees to determine best picture nominees and winners.
The last eight winners of the PGA prize have gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar.
Winners will be unveiled at the 2016 PGA Awards on January 23, 2016.
