Oscar 2012: Supporting Actor

Oscar Confidential: Our Predictions

All five nominees of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar are previous winners.

Alan Arkin
Nominated for Argo, won the Supporting Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, after several nominations (in the lead and supporting leagues).

Robert De Niro
Nominated for Silver Linings Playbook

De Niro has won two Oscars: Supporting Actor for The Godfather, Part Two, in 1974 and Best Actor for Raging Bull, in 1980. He has not been nominated in two decades.

Tommy Lee Jones
Nominated for Lincoln. Lee Jones won the Supporting Actor Oscar in 1993 for The Fugitive.

Philip Seymour Hoffman
Nominated for The Master.
Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar in 2005 for Capote.

Christoph Waltz
Nominated for Tarantino’s Western Django Unchained. Waltz won the Supporting Actor Oscar two years ago, also for a Tarantino movie, Inglourious Basterds.

It’s a highly competitive catgeory this year, in which the frontrunners are Tommy Lee Jones and Robert De Niro.

Our prediction: Robert De Niro
