The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has unveiled five feature documentary nominees. The contenders for the 2013 documentary prize are: Aaron Yeger's “A People Uncounted,” Dror Moreh's “The Gatekeepers,” Jon Shenk's “The Island President,” Marius Markevicius' “The Other Dream Team” and Malik Bendjelloul's “Searching for Sugar Man.”
Nominations for the PGA's top feature award will be announced on Jan. 3. The ceremony for the 24th version of the PGA Awards is set for Jan. 26 at the Beverly Hilton.
The PGA chose “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest” as winner of its documentary award last January.
“A People Uncounted” centers on The Roma (Gypsies) and their history; “The Gatekeepers” contains interviews with six former heads of Israel's domestic secret service agency, the Shin Bet; “The Island President” centers on efforts of former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed to deal with climate change; “The Other Dream Team” follows the 1992 Lithuanian national basketball team; and “Searching for Sugar Man” details efforts to uncover the truth about the rumored death of American musician Rodriguez.
