Sony’s Miracles From Heaven opened to a solid $1.9 million Wednesday, and the faith-based drama appears to be resonating with audiences.
The film about a little girl’s medical miracle received an A+ CinemaScore. It is expected to generate $10 million over its first five days of release, despite heavy competition from Disney’s “Zootopia” and the debut of “The Divergent Series: Allegiant.”
Zootopia, one of the biggest hits of the year, easily topped the Wednesday box office, pulling in $4.6 million. Its domestic total stands at $159.2 million, and it should do $30 million worth of business this weekend.
Miracles from Heaven, which stars Jennifer Garner and Queen Latifah, comes from Sony’s Affirm label, which has had success with the likes of War Room” and Heaven Is for Real.
The studio hopes that Miracles can play well through the Easter holiday.
Faith-based films traditionally are slow burns, but capturing the audience can be difficult.
