Inside Out: Animation Triumphs Over Terminator and Male Strippers

“Inside Out” and “Jurassic World” are racing ahead of newcomers “Magic Mike XXL” and “Terminator Genisys” in the lead-up to the July 4th holiday.

The Disney-Pixar animated blockbuster about the emotional life of a young girl racked up $7.7 million on Thursday, bringing its American haul to $216.1 million, while Universal’s dinosaur thriller added $6.9 million to its $527.2 million domestic haul.

Paramount’s “Terminator Genisys” was close behind, pulling in $6.5 million and bringing its total to $15.4 million. The attempt to reboot the cyborg franchise is facing fierce headwinds. Reviews have been lackluster and, with a $155 million pricetag, “Terminator Genisys” is relying on foreign crowds to propel it to profitability. To that end, it will roll out in 60% of the overseas market this weekend. On Thursday, the film netted almost $10 million in 38 international markets, bringing its foreign total to just under $28 million.

Stateside, “Terminator Genisys” is on pace to fall roughly $10 million short of the $55 million that the studio hoped it would bring in during its first five days. In addition to Schwarzenegger, “Terminator Genisys” stars Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney, and it was directed by Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones”).

In its second day in theaters, Warner’s ’ “Magic Mike XXL” racked up $5.7 million, pushing its total to just north of $15 million. The stripper drama cost a meagre $14.8 million to produce, so it stands to be a profitable venture for the studio even though it will fall short of some estimates that suggested the film would bring in $48 million over its first five days of release. Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello returned for the follow-up to 2013’s sleeper hit “Magic Mike,” with Gregory Jacobs taking over directing duties from Steven Soderbergh. “Magic Mike XXL” was the top film on Wednesday, but the release appears to have been front-loaded, with fans rushing out for a hump day evening out.

Holdovers “Ted 2″ and “Max” picked up $3.2 million and $1.7 million, respectively. The teddy bear comedy has earned $47.3 million, while the military dog drama has snagged $18.7 million after nearly two weeks in theaters.

This summer has shattered several records, but the Independence Day holiday won’t set a new high-water mark. This is partly because the new films entering the marketplace aren’t fulfilling the most bullish projections. Another major culprit is the calendar. July 4th falls on a Saturday, which happens to be one of the busiest days for moviegoing. That means the multiplexes will likely take a hit as consumers opt to steer clear of theaters in favor of beach days, fireworks and barbecues.
