Oscar 2007: France's Cesar Awards Nominations

January 25, 2008–The Diving Bell and the Butterfly features in the five nominations for picture at next months Cesar Awards, Frances top film kudofest. Julian Schnabel, also up for director, edged out the Coens to win director for Bell at the Golden Globes. Bell also won picture at the Prix Lumieres, Gauls equivalent of the Golden Globes.

Bell will face tough competition at the Cesars from at least two films: Olivier Dahans La Vie en rose, the latest French industry profile of a national cultural icon, Edith Piaf, which won lede Marion Cotillard a U.S. Academy nom as actress this week; and Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Parannauds b/w toon feature, which shared a Cannes jury prize last year although it failed this month to make the noms in the Oscar foreign-language category.

Rounding up picture noms are Tunisian helmer Abdellatif Kechiches The Secret of the Grain, which took the special jury nod at Venice, and Claude Millers A Secret.

Competing in 11 categories, La Vie en rose leads the number of nominations for a single film.

The range of nominations bears tribute to the inclusive cosmopolitan spirit of French filmmaking.

Schnabel, Dahan, Kechiche, Miller and Andre Techine, for The Witnesses, face off for director.

Cotillard and Mathieu Almaric, who plays the paralyzed fashion editor in Bell, look like locks on actress and actor, while Persepolis leads the field for first film.

Frances 33rd Cesar Awards take place February 22 in Paris, two days before the Oscar telecast.
