Vet Hollywood director Henry Hathaway had directed six pictures starring John Wayne.
Four of these films were extremely popular Westerns, including Wayne’s Oscar-winning film, True Grit.
The Shepherd of the Hills, 1941
North to Alaska, 1960
The Sons of Katie Elder, 1965
True Grit, 1969
But the other two count as some of Wayne’s weakest films, both artistically and commercially:
Legend of the Lost, opposite Sophia Loren, 1957
Circus World, co-starring Rita Hayworth, 1964, in which he replaced original director, Frank Capra.
