Dancing Pirate (1936): Oscar Nominated RKO Musical, Songs by Rodgers and Hart

This RKO musical, with a score written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, was shot in Technicolor.

The plot is silly and minor: Charles Collins plays a dance instructor, who is kidnaped but then escapes from pirates into a small village, where he falls in love for the daughter of its mayor (played by Frank Morgan).

Oscar Context

The musical was nominated for an Oscar in the Dance Direction category, orchestrated by Russell Lewis, and performed by the Royal Cansinos.

However, the Oscar went to Seymour Felix for creating the extended number, “A Pretty Girl Is Like a Melody,” in MGM’s “The Great Ziegfeld,” which won Best Picture and other awards.
