But Not for Me (1959): Walter Wang’s Romantic Comedy, Starring Gable and Carroll Baker

In one of his last films before his untimely death in 1960, Clark Gable stars as Russell (Russ) Ward in But Not For Me, Walter Wang’s romantic comedy.

Based on the play “Accent on Youth,” the movie deals with the love affair between an older man and his younger secretary.

After producing for thirty years, Russ Ward decides to retire, but his secretary Eleanor Brown, nicknamed Ellie (Carroll Baker) objects, writing him a love note with her resignation.

Russ then turns this intriguing situation into a hit play, starring Ellie in the title role. His romance with Ellie, a May-December affair, complicates matters even more.

The film’s title song, “But Not for Me,” became a popular hit.
