American Dream, An (1966): Oscar-Nominated Adaptation of Norman Mailer’s Novel

In this disappointing adaptation of Norman Mailer’s novel, directed by Robert Gist, Stuart Whitman plays a TV journalist who murders his wife and then gets involved with the mob.

Both Janet Leigh and Eleanor Parker ware wasted in this picture, which never finds its dramatic center or right tone.

It was nominated for the Best Song Oscar, though the cheerful, lovely tune was incongruent with the film’s otherwise sordid and sleazy milieu.
