Dune: Reboot of Lynch’s 1984 Misfire, Boasts All-Star Cast

Josh Brolin is joining the A-list ensemble of the new Dune, a reboot of the 1984 misfire directed by David Lynch in 1984.

Oscar winning scribe Eric Roth will write the Dune reboot, to be directed by Oscar nominated Denis Villeneuve (Arrival).

Legendary closed a deal with the Frank Herbert estate for his iconic novel, granting the studio rights to not only films, but also TV projects on the sci-fi property.

The projects would be produced by Villeneuve, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Set in the distant future, Dune follows Paul Atreides, whose family assumes control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, jurisdiction over Arrakis is contested among competing noble families.

After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature, as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s reign.

The novel was adapted in 1984 by David Lynch, into a movie starringd Kyle MacLachlan. Initially a flop — it was critically panned and grossed just $30.9 million on a $40 million budget, gradually it has attained cult status.

Best known for his Oscar fare such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Munich,” and “Forrest Gump,” which earned Roth his only Oscar, this movie would mark Roth’s first sci-fi.

The cast includes Timothee Chalamet, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac and Zendaya.

Brolin will portray Gurney Halleck, the warmaster for Chalamet’s family and a mentor to his character. Patrick Stewart had played the role in Lynch’s  adaptation.

Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (“Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049”) is helming and co-writing the script with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts.

The movie will be produced by Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter.

Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, Thomas Tull, and Kim Herbert serve as executive producers.

Kevin J. Anderson will act as a creative consultant.
