Barbie: Mragot Robbie (Oscar Nominee, I, Tonya) to Produce and Star in Tale of Globally Iconic Doll

Oscar nominee Margot Robbie (I, Tonya) will star in Barbie, Mattel’s feature film based on the globally recognized doll.

Robbie also will produce through her production banner Lucky Chaps. The film was previously set up at Sony, but after the option passed, Mattel took back the rights.

It is unknown if Mattel is sticking will use the original script, which had an adult comedy tone.

The film was to star Amy Schumer, who dropped out due to scheduling conflicts; Anne Hathaway was to replace Schumer at one point.

The Barbie doll is a global brand powerhouse, with sales of over $3 billion worldwide.

In its half a century history, Barbie has taken on more than 150 roles, including princess, president, mermaid, and movie star.
