Midsommar (2019): Ari Aster’s Suspenseful Tale (Cult, Powerful Movie Ending)

Written and directed by Ari Aster

In this suspenseful tale, a group of college friends travel to a remote Swedish village to participate in a midsummer festival.

Set in a scenic landscape, the tale begins as a serene escape for the group, until it becomes clear that the village is a cult that’s intent on killing the travelers as part of a ritual.

Dani (Florence Pugh) is named the May Queen of the event. After embracing their violent ways, she participates in the village’s sacrifice of her boyfriend, becoming her group’s sole survivor.

This unsettling story is gripping, beginning with the tragic death of Dani’s family and ending with her acceptance of a new “family.”

The film comments on the power of malicious forces, such as cults, to manipulate individuals when they’re at their most vulnerable, such as Dani grieving her family.

By telling the story through Dani’s perspective, the ending remains disturbing long after the credits roll.
