Director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) celebrates the neighborhood now known as New York’s ‘Little Dominican Republic’ in spirited Broadway adaptation to the big screen.
“In the Heights,” the Tony-winning hip-hop musical had put Lin-Manuel Miranda on Broadway’s–and pop culture–map some years before Hamilton
The predominantly Dominican neighborhood is a foreign land–“I’ve never been above 96th Street,” squeals a lost hipster in the first number.
Miranda’s electrifying show follows first-generation immigrants from Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic over several summer days in the uptown barrio.
The movie is one big block party, thrown in honor of the Latino immigrant experience.
An upbeat, joyous show, and inspiration in diversity and inclusion, it features Latinos playing Latinos, singing in rapid-fire rhymes peppered with Spanish expressions and references to Caribbean culture through the food, the fashion, and above all, the music.
