Branagh plays Rick Magruder, a divorced lawyer known for underhanded dealings and protecting criminals. After another successful trial, Magruder celebrates at his firm party and gets drunk.

Stumbling out of the party, he has a chance meeting with Mallory Doss (Embeth Davidtz), a waitress at the party who claims her car was lost. Rick drives her home, noticing her already parked by her father, Dixon Doss (Robert Duvall).

Rick and Mallory argue about her abusive father, after which the two spend the night together.
